Keith Haring -- Had he not succumbed to AIDS at age 31, pop/graffiti artist extraordinaire Keith Haring would have turned 50 this year. To commemorate his birthday, Skarstedt Gallery in the Upper East Side has mounted a 14-piece survey of Haring's work. Stylistically, this show manages to cover a lot of ground. One of the gallery's coups is an early chalk drawing that Haring posted illegally on a blank advertising board in a New York subway station; this piece, yanked in situ from the subway platform, comes complete with the board's metal frame, as well as an adjoining advertisement for Penthouse magazine. Plenty of Haring's politically-themed line figures are in evidence, railing against such hot-button topics as religion and technology, and two of his graffiti-covered sculptures are also on display. Most haunting is an abstract maze-like painting whose right bottom corner is intentionally left blank as a sign of his impending death, which happened just months later. Keith Haring is missed. Tues. - Sat. 10 am - 6 pm, until June 28, at Skarstedt Gallery: 20 E. 79th St., skarstedt.com, 212-737-2060.
